Why ‘With’ counselling? Throughout our training in counselling and psychology, a theme that has emerged again and again for us is the power of the experience of someone walking with another in a way which allows them to feel truly seen, known, and accepted. The English word for compassion comes from the Latin, compati, which means “to suffer with.” We believe people should not have to live with their suffering alone. We hope you will find at With Counselling a compassionate journeying companion.
“Burdens shared and borne together empower us and enable us to carry our woundedness in a new way. Suffering-with is an act of empowerment that revitalizes a human spirit immobilized by pain, degraded by abuse, and debilitated by circumstance.” James Olthuis, The Beautiful Risk
Maybe there is a problem that just keeps coming back. Maybe it has been hard to take a close look at that challenge. Maybe you would just really rather not “go there.” Maybe you find yourself feeling ashamed whenever you think about that problem and wonder if you are the only one. Maybe it feels like people would look at you differently if they knew. Maybe the issue feels like it could never change. We’ll go with you there.
We strive to create an environment that feels safe enough to talk about what you are grappling with and work with you to find solutions to help you reach outcomes which are important to you.
We lean on evidence-based therapy to guide our integrated, client-centered approach. Here’s what we mean:
1. Our approach is personalized. We take key factors into consideration when creating a plan. These include your reason for seeking counselling, your goals, and the many factors that make you, you!
2. Our approach takes helpful elements of several theories into consideration. Our therapists may draw from Attachment Theory, Bowen Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy and Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Narrative Therapy, and/or Person-Centered therapy.
3. Our approach centres around your relationship with your counsellor. Ensuring we build a strong relationship with you and that you feel seen and heard will be our first priority.
